Should a learner move straight from A2 Key to B1 Preliminary?
Start from what the learner can do now—not age or a certificate label.
The short answer
Not always. Check whether all four skills are balanced and A2 performance is stable. If reading-writing or listening-speaking still has a clear gap, consolidate before moving into B1 rather than immediately drilling PET tasks.
Signs to begin
A2 tasks are completed consistently, skill gaps are small, and weekly time supports continued reading, writing and listening.
Signs to wait
The pass was borderline in one sitting, one or two skills are clearly weak, or current school demands are already heavy.

Decide from real performance
- Stability: A2 performance holds across different topics and tasks.
- Balance: no long-term dependence on one strong skill to compensate for another.
- Capacity: progression still leaves room for school study and rest.

- 01Complete one four-skill stage check and record each skill separately.
- 02If one gap stands out, consolidate for four to eight weeks; if balanced, begin B1 ability work.
- 03At B1, first extend text length and communication, then add focused task practice.
