Cambridge English preparation: ability, task transfer and reassessment

Separate preparation into diagnosis, long-term ability building, task transfer and reassessment instead of replacing real ability with test volume.

Start with the direct answer

Use work and assessment evidence to identify four-skill gaps, build underlying ability, then add task format, timing and strategy only when the target and date are clear. Reassess before progressing.

01

Phase 1: establish the starting profile

Do not rely on a total score. Review recent reading, writing, sustained listening and spoken interaction and record the two gaps that most affect task completion.

  • Separate language gaps from unfamiliar task format
  • Prioritise one or two consequential gaps at a time
  • Keep work, error reasons and teacher feedback as a baseline
02

Phase 2: long-term ability building

Build a stable cycle of thematic input, contextual vocabulary and grammar, reading and listening comprehension, and spoken and written output.

  • Keep input, output and feedback every week
  • Connect school tasks with authentic-language materials
  • Measure progress through completed work, not question counts
03

Phase 3: exam-task bridging

Near the exam, focus on official structure, assessment focus, timing and checking. Reassess at the same level and do not auto-promote from one high result.

  • Use official guidance and lawful preparation materials
  • Record accuracy, time, error reason and review action
  • Check current CEQ availability and conditions before assessment
