How to read Cambridge English results, CEFR and certificates
Read the target level and overall result, then the skill profile and official result guidance to turn a certificate into the next learning priority.
A certificate is evidence from one exam, not the end of learning. Read the exam, Cambridge English Scale score, CEFR result, skill scores and official result guidance, then combine them with recent work.
First identify the exam
Different exams have different target levels, score ranges and result formats. Do not compare totals without the exam name or mix young-learner shields with scale scores.
- Confirm exam, version and target CEFR level
- Use the official result guidance for that exam
- Follow the registering organisation's result and certificate instructions
Then read the skill profile
Learners with the same total can have very different skill profiles. Identify the leading and lowest skills, then analyse ability, method, timing and consistency.
- Do not let one high score hide a clear gap
- Connect scores to recent work and classroom performance
- Set a small number of actionable priorities
