When should a learner move from the L system to the S system?
Start from what the learner can do now—not age or a certificate label.
The short answer
The switch should not happen automatically on a date. Around 6–8 weeks before a target exam, move the emphasis to S only when long-term four-skill foundations are stable and remaining gaps are mainly format, timing and task strategy.
Signs to begin
Performance is stable with unfamiliar material and remaining losses mainly come from format, timing or task process.
Signs to wait
Reading, listening or writing foundations still have clear gaps and exam technique is expected to replace ability building.

Decide from real performance
- Stable ability: comprehension and communication hold when topic and material change.
- Concentrated errors: most issues relate to task understanding, timing or checking routines.
- Clear target: exam date, available study time and school demands are understood.

- 01First complete a full level-specific check and separate ability gaps from exam-process issues.
- 02If ability gaps remain large, keep L as the main focus; if gaps are concentrated, increase S gradually.
