PARENT Q&A

How is PET reading different from school reading comprehension?

Start from what the learner can do now—not age or a certificate label.

The short answer

Both require retrieval, inference and text understanding. PET places vocabulary in context and often asks learners to match information across texts; school reading also follows current vocabulary, grammar and textbook goals.

Signs to begin

Reading foundations are secure, but longer texts, vocabulary in context, information matching or pace need improvement.

Signs to wait

Sentence-level comprehension is still insecure and repeated task drilling is being used to memorise answer patterns.

CHECK THESE THREE THINGS

Decide from real performance

  • Can the learner identify purpose and structure before handling details?
  • Can unfamiliar words be inferred from context, word formation and surrounding logic?
  • After an error, can the learner distinguish retrieval, comprehension, inference and timing causes?

WHAT TO DO NEXT

Start in this order

  1. 01Begin with untimed reading for structure, main ideas and meaning in context.
  2. 02Then add multi-text matching and information retrieval, marking evidence for each answer.
  3. 03Add timing last, then adjust reading order and time according to error causes.
